About the Job
Charly answers the phone for more than 100 German municipalities — around the clock, in over 30 languages, hosted in the EU. Behind every call sit speech recognition, an LLM agent with retrieval, and speech synthesis. Each stage has open questions that matter in practice: how do you recognise street names over a noisy phone line? How do you measure whether an answer is correct? With us you don't research in a lab — you work on real (anonymised) data and see whether your result helps citizens.
Your Role
Take on a well-scoped problem from our stack, e.g. STT accuracy on German phone audio, TTS pronunciation of names and addresses, retrieval quality or LLM-as-judge evals
Build datasets and eval pipelines from real, anonymised calls
Fine-tune open models with PyTorch on our GPUs and benchmark them properly against the baseline
Get results into the product: whatever beats the baseline goes to production
Thesis (bachelor or master) with a research question that matters in practice — we coordinate supervision with your university
Your Profile
Studying computer science, mathematics, physics, computational linguistics or similar
Confident Python and first experience with PyTorch, training and evaluating models
Interest in speech processing, NLP or LLMs — you read papers and try things yourself
You enjoy measuring things properly instead of trusting single examples
Full-time internship of 3 months or more, or a working student job at 15–20 hours per week; thesis on your university's schedule
Good English; German is a plus, since our data is German
